MQL represented at international quizzing event in Ghent
4th December 2004

On Saturday 4th December, an international quizzing event took place in Sint-Peter Abbey in Ghent, near the city's historical centre. Countries represented were the hosts Belgium, Estonia, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK.

Travelling from MQL were Dag Griffiths (Wings - Southport & Formby), Mark Kerr (Rainhill Victoria - Liverpool), Chris Quinn (Phoenix - Warrington) and Pat Gibson (Old Dog - Ormskirk). They were joined by Barry Simmons (pictured centre) from Leeds for the evening table quiz - a fiendishly difficult one organised by the Cafe Den Hemel. None of the UK teams prospered in it, but there were a number of notable performances earlier in the day.

A Good Day for Pat Gibson

The first event of the day pitched Belgium versus Estonia and the UK v the Netherlands. Belgium and the UK triumphed and met in the final later in the afternoon, which the UK team won on a tie-break. Northern
Challenge

Whilst the semi-finals were in progress, Dag Griffiths played for a team of 'Celts' who beat Norway in a challenge match. The Celts between them covered Cornwall, Scotland and Wales.

The full line-ups were: Celts (pictured top - left to right: Dag Griffiths, Toby Cox, David Edwards, Richie Parnell and Eric Kilby) - Norway (pictured bottom - left to right: Ole Martin Halck, Tore Dahl, Thomas Bergkirk, Christian Flermoe, Mats Bergstrom).

The second event of the afternoon was an individual quiz held over 7 rounds. Competitors played a series of head to heads and moved up or down a table based on result. At the end of the event Pat finished third behind winner Kevin Ashman and runner-up Nico Pattyn (Belgium). He is pictured above with his prize.

Further and fuller details of the day can be found on www.quizzing.co.uk and www.iqa.be. A big thank you to Chris Jones and quizzing for organising the weekend and to Steven Deceuster and our hosts
