Presentation and Finals Night - May 16th

51 players from 15 teams were at Aughton Institute to see the two finals.

In the Plate Final Unison had disposed of the handicap of 9 points after 2 Rounds and went on to beat Wheatsheaf by 53 points to 43
Phil Duffy and Darren Martin both scored 16 with Dave Waddilove scoring 15 for the losers.

In the Final of the Don Liptrot Trophy Abbey Saints just failed to overcome the handicap of 18 points.
They were on target at half time, being 9 behind, but Aughton Institute eventually won by 4 points.
Brian Davies led the way for the winners with 12, Barbara Flaherty scoring 17 for the losers.


Feeny, Rendon and MQL Plate Finals - May 11th at St Francis de Sales Parochial Club, Walton.

Congratulations to Unison who beat Oxton Cons (Wirral) in the final of the Feeny Cup.

Congratulations also to Colly Wobblers, the holders, who beat Baltic Fleet (Liverpool) in the final of the MQL Plate.

Merseyside Finals/Presentation Night - May 18th at St Stephen's Warrington

Congratulations to Old Dog, the holders who won the final of the Merseyside Challenge Cup.
Their opponents were Wings from Southport.

Congratulations also to Pat Gibson (Old Dog) who won the FInal of the 2011 MIMIR Trophy.
Phil Duffy (Unison) was also a finalist together with Tom Farley (Wings, Southport) and Jim Eccleson (Oxton Cons, Wirral)

MIMIR Trophy - 2010

Ormskirk Heat - Wednesday February 16th
Ship Inn, Wheat Lane, Lathom L40 3BX


A thrilling final was the culmination of a very enjoyable evening of quizzing in the Ormskirk heat of the 2011 MIMIR Trophy.

20 players and spectators assembled at the Ship Inn to see exciting 1st Round and Semi final matches.

The final four were John Wilson, Pat Gibson and Ray Oakes from Old Dog plus Phil Duffy from Unison.

With 1 Round remaining three players had 10 points and one had 11 points.

The final scores were:

Phil Duffy 12

The four finalists plus Rita Aktuna (Collywobblers), Darren Martin (Unison) and Dave Waddilove (Wheatsheaf)
qualified for the Merseyside heat held on Thursday March 24th at Unison Club in St Helens.


Mastermind 'Champion of Champions'

Congratulations to Pat Gibson (Old Dog) who in August 2010 won the battle for the ultimate title, Mastermind Champion of Champions.
Sixteen past champions including Andy Page (also Old Dog) participated in the event,

In their heats Pat took 'Pixar Animated Films' and Andy answered questions on the TV series 'Arrested Development'. Both heats produced close finishes - Andy was beaten by a single point but Pat progressed to the final with fewer passes.

In the final Pat scored 16 points on 'Great Mathematicians' to trail by one point at the halway stage. Adding a further 20 on general knowledge he finished level with Jesse Honey but once again triumphed by virtue of taking no passes.


The Chase

Congratulations to Phil Duffy (Unison) who won £7,500 in June on ITV's 'The Chase'.
Watched by host Bradley Walsh (centre below) and chased by Shaun Wallace, Phil managed to put £8,000 into the pot.

In the final chase he and his surviving partner Angela saw off 'The Chaser' and took home a half share each of the £15,000 prize.

A team called Gamblers which includes Alan Gibbs (Wheatsheaf) won the 3rd series final - broadcast on BBC Four in April 2010


Pointless

Congratulations to Phil and Peter Duffy from Unison who won £12,250 on Wednesday 10th March.
They are pictured below having won the money by correctly guessing that in a survey
no-one would identify the Ridgeway as a designated National Trail.


Mimir 2010 - Ormskirk Heat Wednesday February 24th

15 players from just 5 teams gathered at the Ship Inn near Burscough. A very good venue with a wide choice of real ale and a plentiful supply of sandwiches from the welcoming landlord.
The four first round games reduced the field to 8 players who played 2 extremely close semi-finals which both went to tie breaks.

MIMIR TROPHY 2009

Pat Gibson (Old Dog - Ormskirk 1) ended his long wait for his second Mimir win.
In the 2009 Mimir final he squeezed past team mate John Wilson after a second play-off round.

Mastermind Champion 2005

Pat Gibson (Old Dog, Ormskirk League)

Congratulations to Pat Gibson on becoming the 2005 Champion of BBC TV's Mastermind.

His specialist subjects were:
Round One - Films directed by Quentin Tarantino
Semi-Final - 'Culture' Novels of Iain M Banks
Final - Father Ted


Pat started the series off in convincing style in a very strong heat which included Anthony Martin, formerly of the Ormskirk League. In the semi-final he triumphed with a very impressive score of 35. The final was a closer run thing, after the specialist round Pat was in joint first place with 17 points. He was in the fortunate position of going last in the general knowledge round, knowing that he had a score of 28 to beat.
